About Us

Risley Lower Grammar is a small Church of England primary school that serves approximately 133 children in five classes. Derbyshire County Council funds our school and is responsible for admissions. They plan to admit 19 children into our reception cohort in September. Our school has grown over the decades and now most children come from outside our normal catchment area (the village of Risley). The majority of our children are now from Sandiacre; a quarter are from Risley and the remaining families are from a wide surrounding area (such as Stanton by Dale, Long Eaton, Draycott, Breaston and Borrowash). If you are interested in coming to Risley School then please do call the office to arrange a visit.  The children's school day starts at 9 am (although children and parents are welcome in school from 8.50 am) and finishes at 3.30 pm. We are not able to offer before or after school care but there are many commercial providers who drop off and pick up from the school. Below is a link to our most recent Ofsted report and our church report is on the church links page. The rest of this page contains further background information that you may find useful.

Our Vision and Ethos

Our vision is inspired by Matthew 22:39 - "Love your neighbour as yourself." We want all adults and children to have purpose and resilience so they can help others, as well as themselves.

We work with pupils, their families and the wider community to support and challenge pupils and staff to:

  • be kind, happy, healthy and safe;
  • enjoy learning and achieve their potential within a curriculum that is broad, balanced and full of opportunities to be creative and reflective;
  • make a positive contribution to the cohesion of their community and to support the development of other communities around the world and
  • respect the environment.

At the heart of our work, as a distinctive and recognisably Christian institution, is a commitment to the principles of:

  • purpose and justice
  • tolerance and inclusion
  • and forgiveness and reconciliation

We want our children to wonder, understand and be at peace with God, themselves and His creation.

There is no before or after school childcare provided directly by the school at this site. A number of commercial companies in the area do drop off and collect children from the school and look after them at their facilities. We can provide details of these companies on request.

End of School (Key Stage Two) Results

In their final year at primary school (Y6) children undertake national examinations in May known as SATs. These assessments in reading, writing and maths provide some information about the ability of the children in that cohort - who have now left this school.

In May 2018 we had 17 children in year six and 65% reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined (national 2018 64%). Some children went further and reached a higher standard. At Risley 18% reached this benchmark compared with 9% nationally. The average scale score for reading was 104 and in maths it was 104. Our progress scores are: reading -2, writing +1.3 and maths -1.5. These progress scores put the children's performance into the middle 60% of children nationally.

In May 2019 we had 21 children in year six and 66% reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined (national 2019 65%). Some children went further and reached higher standard. In 2019 this was 10% of our children. The average scale score for reading was 108 and maths it was 106. Our progress scores are: reading +2.8, writing -0.9 and maths +0.8. These scores are likely to mean the children's performance was at least in the middle 60% of children nationally.

More information on performance data about our school, other schools in the local area (in fact any school in the country) can be found on the Department for Education's website. Please check the date on the data shown on these websites as they are updated more slowly than our school website!
